Autumn in the Cairngorms is a season you won’t want to miss. The air gets cooler, and the trees and countryside light up in red and gold. Whether you love hiking or just want to enjoy the outdoors, this season offers a peaceful escape to the highlands that’s hard to beat.
As you explore, you’ll notice the colours reflecting on the lochs, and the forests are alive with wildlife – keep your eyes peeled for red squirrels busily gathering food for the winter. The cooler weather makes it perfect for enjoying long, peaceful walks without the summer crowds, giving you the chance to appreciate the natural beauty at your own pace.
The ancient pine forests around us offer the best places to spot red squirrels and deer, and the walks around Loch an Eilein, on the Rothiemurchus Estate, are among our favourites. For a chance to see them whilst having a bite to eat, a hot cuppa or even a pint, try the Pine Marten Bar at Glenmore.
Autumn is also a fantastic time for birdwatching in the Cairngorms. You’ll likely hear the calls of migrating geese and other birds making their way south. The Cairngorms are home to a rich variety of wildlife that thrives in these cooler months, offering a true treat for nature lovers whatever the weather.
For those of you who crave a little more adventure, there are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy. Take a hike through the scenic Rothiemurchus Forest, cycle along quiet country trails, or try your hand at fishing in one of the local lochs. And after a day out, you can relax in one of the cosy cafés or pubs in Aviemore, warming up with a hot drink while soaking in the beauty of the season.
Glenmore Forest offers a range of hiking trails that wind through beautiful highland landscapes. The easy-going walks around Loch Morlich or to the Green Loch (An Lochan Uaine), are perfect for taking in the surroundings, and come with the possibility of spotting woodpeckers, crested tits and other wildlife. A little further on, The Ryvoan Bothy offers a sheltered spot for a wee break too.
Cycle the Old Logging Way – a scenic 6-mile cycling route connecting Aviemore to Glenmore, It’s suitable for all skill levels and an ideal way to see the Cairngorms in full colour.
For a taste of local produce, the Rothiemurchus Farm Shop is a great stop. You can pick up high-quality meats, cheeses, and handmade treats to enjoy back at your accommodation. Or, grab a coffee and a quick bite to eat at The Barn cafe/restaurant to warm up after a day in the outdoors.
