AVIELOCHAN COTTAGES

About Us

A warm welcome from Avielochan Cottages

We’re Ronald and Fiona Grant, your hosts here at Avielochan Cottages. For over 30 years, we’ve had the pleasure of sharing this beautiful place with guests from all over the world. It all started when we began letting our own home during the summers, then gradually expanded with more cottages – each with its own unique character.

We recently made the big decision to retire from farming, so our focus is now fully on the cottages. We’re thrilled to spend our time making Avielochan a peaceful, welcoming retreat for all who visit.

Our Journey

Ronald’s family roots at Avielochan go back to 1905, when his father, James Grant, first came here as a child. Later, Ronald’s mother, Evelyn, joined him, bringing her experience from the Land Army during World War II. Ronald grew up here, working the land and eventually transitioning the farm from dairy to beef cattle. Fiona joined him on the farm, helping with everything from milking to raising calves before moving into hospitality work in nearby Aviemore.

Over the years, we’ve seen Avielochan change and grow, and now we’re excited to see it through this next chapter.

Life at Avielochan

Avielochan is more than just a place to stay – it’s a true Highland experience. The cottages offer breathtaking views of the Cairngorm Mountains and a peaceful setting near Aviemore. Whether you’re here for the wildlife, the scenic trails, or a cosy getaway, we hope Avielochan will feel like a home away from home. Each cottage has been carefully renovated, with some furnishings made by Ronald himself. From the log burners to the bird feeders outside, every detail is meant to make your stay as comfortable as possible.

Our favourite part of hosting is sharing the area’s hidden gems with guests – whether it’s a peaceful walk by Loch Vaa, spotting wildlife by the loch, or even taking in the sights of passing steam trains. The changing seasons bring their own magic, from vibrant autumn colours to snowy winter days, so there’s always something new to see.

Over the years, we’ve seen Avielochan change and grow, and now we’re excited to see it through this next chapter. We still love spending time here with our collie, Bess, who’s a regular companion on walks around the loch.

Exploring the Highlands

We’re lucky to have such amazing outdoor experiences right on our doorstep. Retirement means more time for ourselves, and we’re taking full advantage! Fiona enjoys her bike rides, occasional 10k runs, and hiking with Bess, and we both look forward to exploring local restaurants and new activities in the area.

And we hope that every guest who stays with us at Avielochan will get to enjoy all the wonderful experiences the Cairngorms have to offer.

Thank you for being part of our journey here.
We look forward to welcoming you soon to Avielochan Cottages and sharing this special place with you.
